Umpire Stanton Parris Passes Away
The following is a message from Mr. Vivian Johnson, Secretary of the WICUA:
Colleagues, It is with deep regret that i have to inform you that our dearly beloved Stanton Parris died this morning.
Stanton has been a stalwart among us for many years and it is very sad to know that he has passed on so soon. Our conventions will definitely be poorer by his passing and we will surely miss his brilliant contributions.
On behalf of WICUA,
I want to take this opportunity to offer condolences to his son martin and the entire family. We share your grief and we mourn with you. Please stay strong.
Regards,
Vivian,
Secretary.

WICUA President reiterates stance to WICB
The following is a message from Hartley Reid, the President of WICUA to the WICB:
Hello Tony,
We spoke on Sunday 9th on this issue and the position that WICUA had taken and communicated to you by the Secretary Vivian Johnson and I had given you my word that I would endeavor to keep the lines of dialogue opened in an attempt to resolved this situation. On returning home and checking my email I discovered that I had received no less than 13 pieces of mail on this issue and all were in support of withdrawing the services of WICUA's Umpires for the remaining two series. This action would be in solidarity of support to Umpires Hayden Bruce and Kesso Dowlath who were removed from the panel of Umpires submitted by T&TCU&SA for 2007/2008.
Let me state here that I too support the decision taken by the umpiring body although I may not agree with all that has transpired this far and I must also state that there was a unanimous decision on this. WICUA will not accept any blame which may come from any action taken. When the WICB's Umpires Sub Committee changed the appointments of Umpires for the resumption of competition after Stanford 20/20 it was done with full knowledge of the facts in T&TCU&SA having visited them and also meeting with the President and Vice President of T&TCB.
For Director Murray to then undermine the process by influencing the WICB Board to reject the changes although he was shown the error of his information back in Trinidad and Tobago is a remedy too bitter to swallow. I implore you to meet with the Umpires Sub Committee urgently to settle this new development.
I stand ready to meet.
RegardsHartley
WICUA withdraws umpiring services from WICB matches
The following is a message from Vivian Johnson, the Hon. Secretary of WICUA:
Please see final exchanges between Hartley and Tony Deyal from the WICB.
It seems that the die is cast. It seems that the WICB through its corporate secretary is not willing to meet with us before three weeks time and as such the President has told him the season cannot be completed without the two umpires being appointed.
It is now a unanimous decision by the executive. Our President is fully backing this decision and therefore unless the WICB changes its mind, all umpires services for the next two rounds are now fully withdrawn. No umpires affiliated with WICUA must officiate in any of the remaining matches unless directive is given by the WICUA through the secretariat. We still hope that good sense will prevail as we are not desirous of disrupting the series but are standing in solidarity as a matter of principle and to ensure that there is a WICUA at the end of all of this.
Gentlemen, if we yield to this at this time, you can forget the West Indies Cricket Umpires Association. Let’s forget the individual one match that we have been appointed for and stand with your organization as a matter of principle. They say that unity is strength and together we are one.Let us all affirm our commitment to this issue and remember as an association no cricket of any consequence can be played without support and participation from the umpires. Please remember that.
Regards, Vivian JohnsonHon. Secretary
WICUA.
WICUA releases statement on sacking of umpires
Colleagues,
It's a sad and difficult day
for the West Indies Cricket
Umpires'
Association when there is a major problem arising from the removal of
two of our colleague umpires from their Carib Beer appointments and we
do not have 100% support from the executive to support the decision
that the overwhelming majority has
decided to take. Eight of the nine executive committee members are in
full support of the action to withdraw the service of our umpires for
the remainder of the series but the one that is not in support is the
President. This is why I said it is a sad day for us.
In the attachment, please find the letter that was sent to the WICB
today outlining our position regarding the revoking of the appointment
of Kasso Dowlath and Hayden Bruce from the Carib Beer matches. We have
not come to this position lightly. It was taken as a result of series
of developments that finally led to the WICB decision and subsequently
ours.
I know that for the last couple of years, the membership has been very
incensed at the situation that has unfolded in Trinidad and Tobago. We
spent the better part of a day in 2006 in Antigua trying to resolve the
matter, various delegations went to Trinidad to try and solve the
matter, but to no avail. What we are seeing now is a type of vengeance
and vindictiveness that we have not seen for a long time. What we
should be seeing is the long arm of reconciliation and forgiveness
among the umpiring fraternity in Trinidad that should be the envy of
all. In fact it is the opposite that is happening and it has manifested
itself in members of the Trinidad Board making
representation to the WICB to remove the two umpires based on frivolous
information.
Colleagues, we have given an ultimatum to the Cricket Board. The time
has come when you must stand up and be counted. We are asking for your
total solidarity on this issue. There should be no umpire who should
feel any different that this could not happen to them. There is a
saying “today for me tomorrow for you”. We
cannot
afford a dangerous precedent to be set as it will have serious
implications for tomorrow. In 1977, the WICBC as it was then, dropped
Desmond Haynes Richard Austin and another from the test team because
they had just signed up with Kerry Packer. Clive Lloyd the Captain of
the team resigned immediately and all the members of the team except
one resigned in solidarity with him. We have not seen a repeat of that
piece of mismanagement since.
It is in this regard, that we cannot afford for this action on the part
of the Board to stand. We are making this stand as a matter of
principle and we want you all to understand that. I have included all
the membership of our association in this memo including Trinidad and
Tobago because I expect the support of the umpires from T&T
on
this critical issue.
Please let us have your response on the intended action so that we can
know for sure that you are supporting your executive in this action and
there is no doubt that that there is total solidarity.
Regards,
Vivian Johnson
Hon. Secretary
WICUA.

WICUA lends support to Steve Bucknor
MESSAGE OF CONSOLATION AND SUPPORT FOR STEVE BUCKNOR:
Steve, the West Indies Cricket Umpires’ Association wants you to know that we are fully supporting you as one of our own that has been at the forefront world cricket for nearly twenty years and have made us proud all these years.
It is unfortunate that these incidents have happened in this Test match, but you have been bold enough to accept your responsibility and apologized which is indicative of your character and strength as a person.
As an association, we have benefited from your tremendous experience and therefore hold you in high esteem. We would like to offer our strongest support to you at this time and ask that you remain calm in this period of adversity.
We do not support the decision of the ICC to replace you as the umpire for the third test as it sends the wrong signal to those countries that are awash with cash, power and influence that they can get what they want as a result of their status. This is wrong and I hope that the ICC will have discussions regarding this decision with a view not to repeat it in the future.
Steve, please remember that we are have always supported you as our standard bearer and these incidents have not changed our views. Let anyone out there who is the epitome of virtue indicate that as a human being he/she is infallible and is not likely to make a mistake. Please take heed of this and remain focussed. God bless you.
